Our work

Transformation

'We save nature and create new spaces by transforming existing buildings into sustainable buildings'
The natural areas of the Netherlands are ever shrinking. More and more land is being used to cater to the demand for new residential/non-residential buildings and living space. At the same time, the number of empty premises is increasing. Outdated buildings are left deserted. They either become run-down or are demolished. This situation is forcing us to rethink how we respond to our demand for space.
Studio Groen+Schild cherish what we already have. We save nature and create new spaces by transforming existing buildings into sustainable buildings and giving them a new lease of life. We are very experienced in reallocating buildings that no longer serve their original purpose, such as a warehouse, a barn or a castle. Characteristic buildings that can still tell a story and enrich our environment. Transformation is a specialty that few can offer. Expertise in the area of technique and use is required. The architects and interior architects of Studio Groen+Schild have this expertise in abundance.  We stand alone in our capability of creating a unique design in an existing structure. We create architecture from within, from the people.

Thin bricks

Groeneveld Castle

Baarn

Modern techniques yielded a special operation in the coach house. We wanted to retain the floors on which horses and coaches once stood. At the same, insulation and warmth was a requirement for its new life as a restaurant. By cutting through the bricks and laying them on an insulated floor, nothing was changed of the old floor to the naked eye and the original ambience could be retained.

Swimming pool is transformed into a creative centre

Centre for Art II

Eindhoven

The Arts Centre is housed in a former swimming pool. This was no longer discernible in the entrance. We removed the retention walls and the suspended ceilings and the original design of the space was once again on show. The authentic black and white tiles inspired the contrasting style of the interior: a dark floor and reception desk and bright walls and ceilings.

Listed villa transformed into an innovative office

SNS REAAL

Utrecht

The historical research into the property revealed the original layout of the rooms, which we incorporated into our design. The facades, frames, internal walls, floors and ceilings have been restored. Our idea for the interior design was born from the historical use of the rooms: waiting in the library, working in the gentleman’s room, meetings in the garden room and lunch in the old kitchen.

A light in the darkness

Residential buildings Deventer

Deventer

The dark and sombre staircase has been transformed into a bright area by using coloured enamelled steel and much glasswork. The bright-red entrance is visually carried through in the staircase. This ensures that the connection between the interior and exterior is especially visible at night.
