De Parabool supports children, (young) adults, and the elderly with intellectual disabilities. With small-scale residential, work, and day activity locations in the Southwest Overijssel region, the organization focuses on personal development, social connections, and full participation in society.

Previously, De Parabool’s service office was located on Colmschaterstraatweg in Schalkhaar. In addition, the organization offered day activities at various locations, including Colmschaterstraatweg and Beatrixlaan in Deventer. However, the existing buildings no longer met modern requirements. They were outdated, difficult to maintain, and hard to make sustainable. Moreover, they no longer aligned with De Parabool’s preferred way of working.

For these reasons, it was decided to sell several buildings and develop a new, modern facility on Brederodelaan in Deventer. In this new building, De Uiterwaarden, four day activity groups and the service office are housed together under one roof. This combination of functions contributes to better collaboration, more efficient use of space, and stronger connections between staff and clients.

The new building was designed with a focus on sustainability, flexibility, and future-readiness. The wooden façade with vertical slats gives the structure a warm, natural appearance and fits seamlessly into the green surroundings of the nearby park on Jan Luykenkolk. The design also consciously incorporates measures to promote biodiversity as part of nature-inclusive building. The architecture includes nesting boxes for birds and bats, as well as shelters for hedgehogs.

Studio Groen+Schild designed both the exterior and interior. This integrated approach ensures that shapes, materials, and colors complement each other harmoniously. The result is a cohesive, warm, and functional building for clients, staff, and visitors.
