In 1960, the Hofstede MTS opened its doors as the first educational institution of its kind, aimed at training young technicians for the industry in and around Hengelo. The building, designed by W.R. van Couwelaar, is a prime example of the functional, modern architecture from the post-war reconstruction period and holds a prominent place at Industrieplein in the Heart of South.

Commissioned by Musketeer Property, Studio Groen+Schild, together with a dedicated design team, is working on the repurposing of this unique school building. This team, consisting of architects from O-M-D Ruimtepioniers and Studio Groen+Schild, landscape architects Odin and Farwick, structural engineers JVZ Ingenieurs, and installation consultant Humble Advice, combines respect for the history with a clear vision for the future.

The former school building is undergoing a transformation into a vibrant complex that will house ‘De Koppeling.’ It will offer space for a hotel, apartments, and offices. This metamorphosis injects new energy into the Heart of South and turns the location into a dynamic meeting point in the city. The first design steps have been taken, and the renders show a promising image for the future.

In the redevelopment, only a small part of the current building will be demolished to make way for the new purpose. The monumental entrance building will be preserved, as well as the gymnasium and most of the classrooms along Parallelweg LS. The heritage will become the identity bearer of this renewed location.
