Hitachi Energy is a global leader in electrification technology, creating a sustainable energy future with innovative, digitally driven solutions for power grids. The organization is moving into a new, high-quality and sustainable office building on the Hitachi Columbus Campus in Mannheim, designed by AllesWirdGut Architecture from Vienna. The campus consists of four volumes arranged around a central green courtyard and aims for climate-neutral operation: it produces as much energy as it consumes.
The four-storey office building is constructed using a timber–concrete hybrid structure with largely prefabricated elements. On top, a spacious rooftop terrace features a lushly planted pergola and an integrated photovoltaic system that generates sustainable energy.
The building has a clear, rectangular layout. Our interior concept introduces circular design elements that reflect Hitachi’s identity. These “Circles of Energy” evoke a sense of flow, movement, and energy, and are strategically positioned to encourage dynamism, interaction, and intuitive wayfinding. Circular custom furniture, luminaires, and flooring patterns reinforce this flow and give the communal areas an open, inviting character.
Sustainable, wherever possible biobased materials with a natural finish form the foundation of the interior. Four colour palettes, “Powered by Nature” – Earth, Water, Sun, and Wind – create distinctive atmospheres for the teams and strengthen the sense of connection with nature. Cooler colours are used on the sunny side of the building, while warmer tones are applied to the cooler side.
The open floorplates offer space for an innovative workplace concept emphasizing community, collaboration, and flexibility. A clear zoning transitions from lively areas to quiet focus zones, with colourful enclosed boxes and flexible dividers that create ergonomic and acoustically comfortable workspaces.
Digital storylines, interactive presentations, and recognizable Hitachi branding form a consistent thread throughout the interior. The office not only reflects the identity and technological strength of Hitachi Energy, but also radiates an informal, energetic, and future-oriented atmosphere that appeals to young talent. In this way, the building embodies Hitachi’s brand values: a dynamic energy company that connects innovation with responsibility for our planet.
